incy wincy spider

When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.
- Ethiopian Proverb

I think I've finally recovered from my heart attack.

I was sitting on the loo, minding my own business (so to speak) when, as I went to get some loo paper, I got the shock of my life.

Sitting behind the toilet roll was this wee guy: a huntsman spider who's leg span was a tad under 8cm in diameter...well, that's a guess. The glass we used to remove him was 8cm in diameter & he only just fit. So he was probably bigger if his legs were all flattened out.

Now, I realise that's not big compared to many spiders in the world. But I come from New Zealand...where the biggest spider is the whitetail which measures a poxy 2cm at most.

Rest assured, no spiders were harmed in the making of this blog. We released him back into the wild...ie we took him across the road so he'd go into someone else's house & not ours. Needless to say, I'm a bit reluctant to go back to bed right now.

hot & steamy

It's a sure sign of summer if the chair gets up when you do.
- Walter Winchell

At 8am this morning it was already 24 degrees & muggy as a wet armpit.

It is forecast to get to 32 today...which isn't all that hot for summer. But it's not summer yet & I'm used to New Zealand summers where it only gets to 30 on one or two days sometime in January.

Time to haul out the air conditioner, methinks.

venting

Before you were conceived I wanted you. Before you were born I loved you. Before you were here an hour I would die for you. This is the miracle of life.
- Maureen Hawkins

My scan today was bad news.

No ovulation this month.

Words can't describe the hurt, frustration & anger I was feeling on the way home.

Hurt because, despite knowing the chances are low & you'll probably have to do multiple months of treatment, you still put your hopes up a bit & secretly think that none of that will apply to you. That it'll work 1st time. Because it has to. Why wouldn't it? Then it all comes crashing down around you. Only to start all over again next month.

Frustration because it just seems like a constant cycle of pills, passion, high hopes, scans, disappointment, repeat.

Anger because my stupid body isn't doing what it's supposed to. I feel like reaching inside myself & slapping my ovaries silly in a bid to get them to perform the only function they've been put on this earth to do.

Anger because I have no choice in this. I have no choice whether I have kids or not. My choice has been taken away from me - I have no concious say in the decision whether or not to have children because my hormones have already made that decision for me.

What makes it almost worse is that I already have a child & there are so many women in the same position that don't. So I feel almost selfish to think like this.

Pills, passion, preggy test, repeat.

Sigh.

out for a drive

You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can see the whole trip that way.

Today is Melbourne Cup Day. It is a public holiday in Melbourne...not anywhere else...not even the rest of Victoria. Just Melbourne.

None of us have the slightest interest in horse racing, so we all went out in the new car for a picnic & a chance to enjoy the beautiful (& hot) weather. We found a quiet spot up on the Dandenongs & had a BBQ surrounded by forest & peace & quiet.

One thing Melbourne does really well is it's picnic spots. Fantastic facilities & free gas BBQs. Marvellous.

Having a car provides so much freedom. It's nice just to be able to leave home when you want, go where you want & not be hampered by distance, public transport worries or imposing on other people. And for less than the price of my weekly taxi rides alone (not counting Mr Grumpy's daily usage) we can fill up the car from empty & get more than a week's worth of petrol.

A great day out.

Service note:

Because I (foolishly) switched to new Blogger (well, they said they were out of Beta & one assumes that means it's all working properly but apparently I was foolish to think so)...I now no longer have a working archive page that automatically updates it's index. The links to each individual post also don't work at the moment.

Until Blogger sorts this out, you'll have to manually click March or April to get to the appropriate archive page.
